A regional storm that ravaged Southwest Washington in early December killed three, severed major highways, destroyed homes and displaced locals. As clean-up efforts continued through the holiday season, the Interlake (Bellevue, Wash.) wrestling team decided to do its part. At the team's Dec. 22 invitational at Centralia, the Saints showed up with $300 worth of gift cards to gas stations, grocery stores and the Home Depot. The team asked school officials to distribute the cards to area residents hit hardest by the flooding. With its gesture, Interlake displayed the kind of leadership that helps unite communities in a time of crisis.

U.S. Marines Leader of the Month

Do you know the difference between a great athlete and a great leader who happens to also be a great athlete? A leader is a special person who cares about their teammates as much as their own athletic performance. A leader is willing to sacrifice for the benefit of the team. A leader sets examples for teammates. A leader is the first at practice and the last to leave. A leader plays with passion and respects the competition. A leader always looks to set a positive example, whether on the playing field, in the classroom or within the community.

The U.S. Marines stand for special individuals who are ready to take leadership roles. So does RISE. As a result, the U.S. Marines and RISE partnered up on the Leader of the Month award to salute high school athletes who best exemplify what it means to be a leader on and off the field.

Know someone who is a special athlete?
Know someone who is a leader to their peers?
Know someone who leads by example?

If so, we’d love to hear about them. Maybe they can be named Leader of the Month and be featured in RISE.

Go ahead and nominate them at Leader@risemag.com
