Syria might expel Iraqi officials

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There are signs that Syria might be considering expelling Iraqi officials who sought safe haven as Saddam Hussein's government collapsed, a senior U.S. official says.
"We have asked the Syrians to close their border and we have asked them to locate and expel anybody who shouldn't be there. At this point, there are some indications they are taking our concerns seriously," a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday.

"It looks like they are considering our requests," the official added, saying he did not know if the Syrians had actually identified and located anyone who might be expelled, let alone decided to do so.

The United States has accused Syria of helping Iraq as it sought to fend off the U.S. military attack that succeeded in ousting Saddam from power in less than a month and of possibly harbouring fleeing Iraqi officials. Syria has denied this.
