Thanks for posting these flicks... I'd do the same if I knew how. Have a few that are scanned in and saved to jpg. I spent 2&1/2 years at the barracks, roughly. From 3/73 to 9/75. It was good duty and I served with some great guys in the AFSC detachment. Recently found three of the old crew by chance on a similar forum (Casler, Hunt, and Gunny Root) . Adding them to the four I stay in contact with (Anderson, Humbird, Collar and Wilson) makes a pretty good handful. Would like to hear from Cpl Patrillo, L/Cpl Cero, Cpl Smitty, Cpl Sutton, L/Cpl Jimmy Anderson, Sgt Green, Sgt Hall, Cpl Newton, Cpl Sam Perry, the Story brothers, Ottis and Floyd, L/Cpl Michaels, Melvin, Sgt Boring, Keeling, T-Bone or anyone else out there I've neglected to name. I'd love to hear from any of your rascals. Same for you Chaffin. Keep the faith. Sgt John Maddog Madden

Wow.....that's actually now the building where MCSF Battalion is headquarted. No longer a barracks, it's now where the Battalion Staff, Battalion SgtMaj and Battalion CO have their offices. The bottom floor is where the Battalion CONAD/Admin is located. I used to go there every day when I was with 3rd FAST in '06-'07. 3rd and 1st FAST now share the barracks on Camp Allen outside of the Naval Station. I don't know what that building in front of the Battalion building used to be but it's now an MCCS gym.

Even though those pics are from two decades before I was there, these pics still brought back memories. Thank you.

This is my first time to try and post attachments so I hope I'm doing it right.

Wanted to share the pics with those who might have served here, but more than anything was hoping to flush some old Marines out into the open. We'd mostly be in our mid-to-late-fifties now. We've a group of about eight from the same era communicating on email, etc., and would be glad to collect a few more from our unit, which was AFSC, or anyone else from Main Guard or AUW for that matter.

Of the picks I've tried to upload:
1st is two buddies on the balcony with the old gym in backdrop.
2nd is Formation in early 73, maybe even late 72, out front on lawn.
3rd is Formation of the AFSC section out at the college.
4th is Formation the CO's end of the barracks.

Here's to hoping some old friends are surfing the site,
Sgt John (Maddog) Madden

Thanks for the photos. I was stationed there from April 1967 through August 1968, with a 6 month TAD to Lajas Azores to guard the AUW complex there. Marine Barracks was great duty for an 0311 just back from Vietnam. Tried to get on the base last year to visit, but it now is a closed base. Took the bus tour which drove past the Barracks so I got a quick look at the place. Brought back alot of good memories.

Unless it has changed in the last yr or so, it is still considered a barracks. There are Marines that live on the upper floor.

Welcome Jack!... You predate me considerably (73-75 at the barracks) but I bet things were similar for a Marine on duty there. I saw on MarineCorpsMike's post that he even went did 6 months in the Azores compound. Both Andy (also posted here) and myself went to the Azores, although they closed the AUW compound a month after I arrived. I'd love to visit the place. Lot of memories there. Even met my son's mother there at the AFSC compound, a Marine Corps Colonel's daughter. You could say I departed for Pendleton with more gear than I came with. :-)

I was stationed there from 1980-1982. Funny thing was in headquarters I was a carpenter, barracks locksmith. I remember playing softball on that field. We had a great team...kicked some Navy ass. I wish I could find some of the old boys from the shop. I wonder if the trophy cabinet is still in the main hallway. I did have a part in building it.

My first year there was at mainside and my second year was at Armed Forces Staff College in the Marine Security detachment. I've got a lot of good memories of my time in Norfolk. Spent many off duty nights at the Fleet Landing Restaurant just outside of Gate 2. Found that Virginia Beach was a great place to go as, back then, it was mostly beach cottages where it wasn't hard to find a beach party any night of the week. I was shattered when I got manditory orders to Camp Lejeune. I ended up heading up to Norfolk on liberty weekends fairly often.

Zoolander, I could tell you some good stories about your old pappy... but then again he'd probably kill me. Sure enjoyed my time there with him. He left for Canine duty, in Turkey I believe, and I was there another year or so. He took his job seriously but knew how to have fun. Still enjoy emails from him today. Semper Fi to you Brother! Bet he's proud to have a Marine for a son.

I was in Norfolk in March of '87 to process out of the Corps. Spent two weeks there being treated like crap until the Sgt there asked me what they were discharging me for. I told him I was at EAS and was going on to the police academy. Apparently, they put me in with the wrong group of Marines and I was in a holding company for dishonorables by mistake. In that two weeks we policed the grinder twice a day, walked fire watch around the clock, and were in a constant state fo field-daying the barracks. When they realized their mistake I just told them I was fine where I was and would stay there until it was time to leave. I remember a Marine by the name of Goodnight, but that's about it...oh, and the MarBar.....

God that brought back tons of memories. We stayed there in between when our ships were dry docked and did P.T. all the time with Fast Company. I actually almost did a re-enlistment package because fast company wanted me thanks to my 1st Sgt in the Mar-Det but I didn't want to spend my entire enlistment in Virginia since it's where I grew up. I had the California fever. Looking back on it I wish I would have wen't to Fast. That was a neat cozy little station and about an hour and a half from my hometown. What did they do knock it down and rebuild it?

I was at MB NorVa 7/74-11/76. Served as Barracks Adjutant and GO, AFSC. Updates on a couple of officers, Jerry Humble retired as a Major General, Rick Duvall is retired in MI-He's the one who had the Austin Healy. Chuck Armstrong died in 2011 in Texas-brain cancer as I understand. Col Al Ruggiero is living in VA and is in his late 80s. Spoke to him last winter and he sounded great.

Sorry, I don't recall Arty Brown. I left MB NorVa, Dec '76 so maybe we passed in the night! O'Boyle and Wass must have been after my time as those names don't ring a bell. Chuck was an entertaining character and yes, he drove the Camaro. We crossed paths at 29 Palms in early '79 when he was a Co Commander w/some 2nd MarDiv battalion and I was the CO of an artillery battery. We shot for his battalion and I think everyone learned something. Hope all is well with you. Best regards and Semper Fi,

Was stationed at the barracks from 77 to 80. Open squad bays lived above the navy mess hall while they were renovating the barracks. Got out the month everyone moved in to the ne barracks. Capt Armstrong could do some pull ups. I never beat him but one year i did get 66 to win the field day. Spent my time at AUW (they moved as well when i got out) and spent a year in the gym with Special Services. How many times would you be in yhe marbar swilling 50 cent cans because it was the cheapest place to drink between pay days

Hell yes I remember Capt. Armstrong & he loved acting out his Damn name! He would run us all over the base & love running us to the ships! I was there from 76 to 80. Did some time behind the wire @ AUW & then a great time TAD to Damneck working the range. I had a roomie @ the range named Arty Brown from Denver CO. Maybe you know him, he came over from the Correctional Facility.

Yes, and remember downing the beers up in the bar before going out to kick some sailors asses! I really had a good times while TAD at the rifle range on Damneck base. Hope all's going well with you!

Tony there is also a Marine Barracks Norfolk Facebook page I chatted with Dennis over there. I drove him home before he went over to Oki. I was the other Boston kid. You helped me qualify Expert on the Pistol Couldn't get past sharpshooter on the rifle. Sorry about the s at the end. When you put the AUW Dam Neck thing up I remembered you been almost 40 years

I'm wracking my brain Durant and I can't picture you. It's Vick, AUW. Remember Feb 23 1977 behind the wire? Scott&Scudder?

Hope all is well. and by the way, can't we put up Pvt Timothy G Scudder as a lost Brother. I remember having beers with his Dad, Leslie in the MarBar. And just so you know Pfc.Milton R Scott was sentenced to 30 hard but was released in 92. Living in Antioch Tn.

Leave a note at Scudders gravesite on Findagrave.com.

Vick I remember you. I got to the barracks right after the Scott/Scudder murder happened and had never met either one of them. We were behind the Wire together and Dombrowski punished me once by giving me 30 days behind the wire. I was nodding on post. It never happened again. I saw where Leslie passed away in 2007 Check out Marine Barracks Norfolk VA page on Facebook House, Vaught, Martin, Boyd, Himes and others are there

Now I got it. Damn! Long time. I'm not on FB but I'll see about getting on it.

The 30 day deal with Gunny Ski tripped the brain pan. 30 days in. That kind of thing sucked arse.

Thanks for the reply brother, I'll be in touch.

Not sure if anyone is aware, but they are getting ready to tear down MB-28 this summer. The attached photo's are from today (6/12/17). I have about 15 more pictures but for whatever reason I couldn't get them to upload and some loaded upside down. The place looks awful. All those hours I spent police calling the grounds and field daying the barracks, broke my heart. Anyways, if anyone wants the other pictures I have just email me at kevinhutt69@gmail.com.

Was there in 1984/86 Loved every minute of it. Now work for the VA and work with a guy who was there when I was, he is now a retired Gunny, imagine that!

I stood the gates while in the Main Guard at Marine Barracks Norfolk from early 1959 to mid 1960. I was then transferred to the Security Detachment at Armed Forces Staff College when I got a Final Top Secret Clearance. I loved Norfolk and even did a number of weekend trips there when I was transferred to Camp Lejeune in 1961.

I was feeling a little bit nostalgic and searching for pics of the old place. Apparently the Navy kicked us out and tore down the barracks and gym. The entire block is now a fenced in Naval building. I was in MCSFBN S-2 from Jul 96-Oct-97 when I EAS'd. It was definitely the best duty station I had ever been assigned or even deployed to. I could open the door form my room and my vault was right there. 30 second commute from my room to the S-2 admin office. The bar was literally a few steps from my office door. What more could a Marine ask for? Thanks for everyone who posted pics!
