My son is at MCRD/SD. On some of the various USMC web sites I have seen suggestions that blister band-aids and moleskin and 1 gallon baggies should be sent inside letters as they are highly prized by recruits. My question is are such items permitted?

Anything thicker than a one page letter must be opened in front of the drill instructor. Goodies are paid for in sweat. The Marine Corps takes good care of recruits and he probably wants for nothing but a letter from home.

Stock up on that stuff as it is useful in the future but for now just send letters. Get a tackle box and put all the goodies in there for later. He can carry that with him to SOI or MCT.

His plt will have a recruit designated as a 'witch doctor', I was one during boot in 92. We carried extra bandaids and moleskin for recruits who ended up with blisters or small cuts...every where your son goes in the field there will be a Corpsman assigned to the Co. to handle other issues. I'd be careful sending anything extra in the mail, as Bulkyker stated, it will be paid for if it is deemed 'contraband'.

Anyone recently out of boot, do they still us 'witch doctors'?

That is reassuring. Thank you for the advice.

That's for sure don't send anything but a letter because if you send the wrong thing the whole platoon will pay dearly for it.
