SAN DIEGO -- Seven puppies that won the hearts of a group of Marines while in Iraq will soon be calling San Diego home.

According to Patty Brooks, spokeswoman for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, the pooches will be reunited with their leathernecks in the next few weeks.

The puppies' mother was a guard dog when the Marines arrived at their camp in Iraq, according to Capt. Jamisen Fox. The troops stepped in when the "working mom" had trouble with performing her duties and caring for her puppies, he said.

The puppies are expected to arrive in San Diego over the weekend. They were spending the night in Washington, D.C., after a United Airlines flight, Brooks said. The puppies will then spend some time at the humane society until the Marines return to Camp Pendleton in mid-March, she said.

While in Iraq, the Marines were part of a team training Iraqis to protect the country's borders.

Last week, Miramar-based Marine Maj. Brian Dennis flew another dog from Iraq to San Diego. He named the dog Nubs and the pooch is being cared for by his friend until he comes home in the spring.

The humane society has created a fund to help pay for costs. Donations can be sent to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, Iraq Dog Medical Fund, 389 Requeza St., Encinitas, CA 92024.
