Anyone know of a USMC tat photo gallery or something I can look at? I want to get my first tat this weekend but i'd like to see a bunch of pics of other Marines to get some ideas. I know there's one on grunt.com, but i'm looking for anything else.

I don't have one yet. But I am favoring a simple one color Eagle Globe and Anchor.

My plans are just to get a basic one color EGA on my arm mabye with Semper Fidelis, Semper Fi or USMC underneath it and that's it. I've seen a lot that look like total crap though and I don't want that.

My buddy just got a tat with the "new style" EGA that is being used in all the modern USMC print ad's and whatnot, it looks pretty badass but I just want the traditional EGA.

Then when I get back from Afghanistan i'll get a deployment tat with... meh i'm not even going to say it and god willing I won't need that tat.

I got a basic USMC tat in 1983, or at least it was basic back then. It's the bulldog with the smokey with US on one side and MC on the other. I got it on my forearm and it's tasteful and doesn't make people go OH MY GOD!

The Sgt. Grit website has a gallery of USMC Tattoos. They also have tons of t-shirt, decal, and patch designs that a guy could choose from or pattern after.

My Eagle Globe and Anchor Tattoo on right shoulder, from 1989ish was designed by an artist with an affinity for Harley Davidsons. He had a really cool drawing of an Eagle landing on a Harley motor with wings still outstretched in typical 'Harley"style. He took that eagle off the motor and put it on the Globe and added and Anchor and I really like it. It is definitely a Eagle Globe and Anchor, but it is different from any I have ever seen.

Before you get this Motto tattoo please be sure that you want it and will not regret it later on. I know A LOT of Marines that have gotten Marine Corps related tattoos and then after a couple of years regretted it. Just think about it?

And you would be surprised at the Marines who regret getting motto tats. I am planning on getting one... eventually. Just have to be sure about it.

It's already tattoo'ed to my soul, this is just my way of making it visible.

John, if you click on my myspace page you can see my USMC tattoos.

I think I posted them here a while back but not sure where they are now.

I've got the traditional EGA, a Iwo Jima tattoo and then a battle scene with F4U's and some Japanese Zero's. I just thought to myself what would look cool and dug up some pics from the internet and or magaziens and brought them to my artist. He worked his magic from there.

Its funny to hear some people tell you to make sure you know what you're doing, or how their friends got tattoos and regreted it later, (what, are they your moms or daddy)?....who gives a $hit what they say. I have the respect to know you, a Marine, knows what the fvck they're doing with their personal life and what you can do within the new USMC policy.

Post some pics when you get them brother,

Semper Fi, Ron

I had gotten the typical flash from the wall USMC bulldog back in 78...it lasted for quite a while, it was my first and favorite. Its still there but now long covered.

The stuff I have now is custom with him drawing up the airplanes and placing them above the flag raising, as in during the actual battle, it came out nice. I went for the typical EGA as well. I found the one I wanted in a magazine and he went with it.

i agree. There were a couple of Marines that i knew wished they would have thought about it a bit more before. Placement and type are a big factor.

I waited 10 years after i got out of the Corps to get my EGA. Had to find the right one and where to locate it.

SEMPER FI,

Cool Ed, bet it will look cool. You can never be too old to get your first tattoo!!

I've heard some say, and I'm saying this in a sarcastic tone, (your tattoos will be all saggy and flabby when you get old). If you reach such an age to where your skin is all saggy and flabby then the quality of your tattoos are the least of your problems I'm thinking. Your skin would look like crap in that condition with or without color.

Not going to correct myself, but I will clarify.

The eagle on the "modernized" EGA drawn up by whoever the Marine Corps hires to do their advertising campaigns is virtually identical, I simply made the observation as a con against the newer style because I am undecided in which EGA version i'm going to get. The traditional EGA is a classic, Marines from Belleau Wood and Marines from OEF like me with the exact same tat, doesn't get any better than that. The modernized EGA looks cool and I was seriously considering getting it, but I just can't get past the similarities between it and you-know-what. Don't get ****ed at me for making a pretty blatant observation, write a letter to J. Walter Thompson & Co.

Accord==========I posted this once before. It is a kind of a comparison between US Marine training and Waffen-SS training. I am not pro SS but if you think about it????====Waffen-SS Indoctrinated to believe in the superiority of themselves and their national socialist cause, the soldiers of the SS were the third reich's elite. Strict physical standards were set for entry, and the training of SS soldiers stressed aggression and placed an emphasis on small-tactics.

When I got mine, it was during the phase where popular tats were spider webs on the elbows and knees and then the hinges on the inside of the elbows and back of knees, most of those guys I know now are regretting that decision. I wanted something tasteful, something that spoke about who I was, and something I wouldn't regret in my older years. So I got a tasteful USMC w/Bulldog, I liked it so much I went back 3 days later and got an Indian head done. I then waited a year and, STUPID ME, got a playboy bunny, which I have since covered up with a Wolf Paw print.

Each represents something in my life and describes who I am. I feel this should be anyones criteria when doing body art, choose something that describes you and definitely something that you won't regret in 20 or so years.

I got this one about 5 months ago on my left shoulder. I wish I had gotten it bigger but I plan on adding some writing underneath it to make it cover up more of my shoulder/arm. Also I'm gonna get it touched up as some of the lines aren't as dark as they should be. Any suggestions for writing underneath it would be great.

Sounds like a good idea Sgt., just don't know if it would look good on my arm cause there isn't too much room underneath the tat and it might look weird if I get some of the phrase above it and some under (just because the tattoo sits pretty high on my shoulder already)

I think I'm gonna have to go with "Semper Fidelis" though....if the tattoo was lower I'd get "Death Before Dishonor" going around it but it's too late for that now, here's a picture from further away:

on his throat and over his juggler vein. Most motivating to say the least.... at 84 years old that Marine didn't stay on the porch he partied and hung with the big dogs!

These were taken by my youngest daughter, so the quality isn't that good but you get the point. They are very clear in real life, or as real as my life gets, lol.

Brian, there is nothing wrong with the standard Bulldog at all, its traditional and its the very first one I got in Millington back in '78. It is long covered now and actually stood up very very well for being on the top forearm.

I will say there are so many more artists than back in the day, they tend to do better work, so use your imagination before you get one, be creative and you can get some bad azz work. It may take more than one sitting to get some quality, detailed work, but its a life long commitment.

On one part of my arm I got the Iwo battle and on the backside I have the traditional EGA.

Take your time, check out portfolios and possibly anyone that has personally had work done by the artist. Trust me, I have a "few" tattoo's, so I kinda know.

JetDoc,

Thanks for the advice. Those tats you have are amazing! I have one right now, its an Eagle Globe and Anchor on my left shoulder (It's on page 5 of this thread). I still don't know what kind of writing I want to get with it.....I wanted something above and below it similar to yours but the one I have right now sits to high on my shoulder so I think that idea wouldn't work. Also I want any writing I get added to it to be pretty decent in size, nothing to small or "girly" looking. At the same time I don't want to get something too big that will "over power" or "take away" from the Eagle Globe and Anchor.

As a "Tattoo expert", what do you thing about this idea:

Getting the "Semper fidelis" banner added to the beak of the eagle and underneath it getting "USMC" in old english. The only problem I see with this is that it might be hard for them to add the banner....but then again I'm not expert and have no idea.

Thanks for any help! :usmc:

Brian, the S/F banner may be tough as the EGA is, as you said, up high on your delt. The old english USMC sounds cool though.

See what an artist thinks, I am not creative like those guys. I usually give them an idea, or image, and let them put their creativity into it.

Thank you! Getting it done was definitely LONG overdue! I'm starting an exceptionally strict diet to slim down again after having been fat 'n nasty way too long - I'm using it as motivation to get back down to a reasonable weight!

I know I'm a little out of date with the times but can someone please tell what the cresent moon on the anchor represents? The cresent moon is on the top fluke of the anchor close to the eagle.

When I was at boot camp, one of the drill instructors had the standard EGA tat on his calf with the words, "Each day we will spill their blood till it rains down from the skies" ..amazing quote from a bada** movie, shame on you if you don't recognize it. If anyone is considering a creative alternative to Semper Fi, USMC, death before dishonor, etc, I'd definitely consider that one. That, or maybe Veritas Aequitas

Cpl Quirno gave you solid advice.
This Tat is on you for life(unless an expensive surgical proceedure is done)

If you are dead set on getting one consider carefully size and placement.

In 57 I got a eagle holding a usmc banner. Now it's just one big blurr. I suggest something that is not crowded together, that you can tell what it is 50 years from not. It got blurred after about 15 or 20 years. Boy! but was it pretty in 57.

Things change all the time the looks of things the way things are made and the way that people do things also change. But the one thing that doesnt change is the esprit de corps that a Marine has instilled in him during boot camp and his dedication to God, Country, and Corps.
So the one thing that should never change in this world is the Emblem that was chosen by Marines to represent them and there way of life which is very unique to any life in the world it is a life of honor pride and dedication a life that we as marines strive to show not just our brothers but the world because we know our way of life is a great way of life so. I say you may embrace the new EGA but as for me i say why change something that is not broken and will never break.

I am not your dad or mom or anything that you must listen to. I am only giving your my opinion and we all know what opinions are worth. I thought about a tat when I was 18 and thought about it till I can no longer get one. I waited to long. It is not a good idea to get a tat when you have diabetes. It also it not worth the possiblity of infection which would probably disfigured the tat. Do what you want to do. Only you have to like it. If others don't too d*** bad. Semper Fi
