EWING, N.J., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- New Jersey-based WorldWater & Solar Technologies announced it has shipped 12 of its solar water and power-supply units for a U.S. Marines program in Iraq.

WorldWater, a developer of high-power solar systems, is taking part in a U.S. Marines project at Camp Fallujah to provide clean drinking water or water for irrigation along with electric power for Iraqi farmers others along the Euphrates River. As part of the project, the Morrell Foundation contracted WorldWater to ship 12 of its Mobile MaxPure solar water and power-supply units capable of supplying up to 30,000 gallons of water per day.

"The units will arrive at Baghdad Airport next week, where the military will pick them up and distribute them for immediate use by farmers," Quentin Kelly, WorldWater chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Within 30 minutes of setting up a Mobile MaxPure unit at its destination, the people living along the Euphrates River will be able to have their most basic needs met -- clean water to drink and to grow their crops.

"Currently Iraqi farmers do not have reliable power from the electric grid to operate their irrigation pumps or to treat their water for drinking, and the river is seriously polluted. Our units will turn the brackish water from the river into clean water instantly."

Officials say the humanitarian project is also an effort to show the effects of growing stability to Iraqis to encourage continued cooperation in the security effort.
