NAVY COMPASS EDITORIAL
Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society

For more than 100 years, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) has been there to meet the emergent financial needs of our Sailors and Marines; and they’ve done so completely as a result of those same Sailors and Marines who generously donate their hard-earned dollars out of their own free will.

Our men and women give simply because they understand they have shipmates and fellow Marines stationed around the globe that need their support during difficult times.

Sponsored by the Department of the Navy, NMCRS operates nearly 250 offices on Navy and Marine Corps bases, both ashore and afloat, around the world; and there are more than 3,000 trained volunteers globally who help do the work of NMCRS.

It is not a short list of services NMCRS provides for us.

The financial assistance the Society offers includes interest free loans and grants for emergency needs as well as needs-based scholarship opportunities for educational purposes. They also provide thrift shops, budget counseling services and visiting nurse services among other activities.

Along with active duty and retired Sailors and Marines and their families, NMCRS provides assistance to eligible family members of Sailors and Marines who died on active duty or in a retired status, reservists on extended active duty as well as indigent mothers (65 years or older) of deceased service members who have limited resources and no family to provide for their welfare. Each year, we get the opportunity to contribute through the drive. Last year, San Diegoarea Sailors and Marines were able to raise more than $165,000 towards NMCRS. This year, the drive officially kicks off March 1 and goes until April 30, and we’re planning on doing even better. Whether you give four dollars a month or 40, know that there’s someone out there whose face you may never see whose life is made better because of your generosity.

NMCRS is constantly looking for volunteers, and there are many different areas in which they are currently recruiting. Among the positions the Society is looking to fill are receptionists, caseworkers and hospital visitors. For more information on these positions and how to volunteer, contact my friend Denise Klainshaw at (619) 238-1068 or email her at Denise.Klainshaw@NMCRS.org.

Whether it’s by hands-on activity or by a financial contribution, you are encouraged to familiarize yourselves with NMCRS, learn its importance, and contribute in any way you can to help a your shipmates who can benefit greatly from your support.
