Marine Corps Appreciation Day at Wright Museum

Marines, both active duty and past duty, will receive complimentary admission to the Wright Museum of WWII History for a special appreciation day SAturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate the idea, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."

In addition to gallery tours, there will be a Color Guard and refreshments will be available. Special displays of WWII-era Marine Corps memorabilia from private collections, as well as a one-day-only display of artifacts from the museum's archive will also be on view.

This special appreciation day is being observed on the 63rd anniversary of the historic flag raising on Iwo Jima. Among the six Americans taking part in this historic event was New Hampshire native Rene Gagnon, who is the subject of a permanent exhibition at the Wright Museum. The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the costliest military engagements of WWII and is one of the most revered military encounters in Marine Corps lore.

"The U.S. Marines — in WWII and since their founding in 1775 — have served our country with great distinction," said Wright Museum director Mark Foynes. "This event is just one small way of showing our appreciation for their service."

"The Wright Museum is such an asset to all Americans," said Jeff Adjutant of the N.H. Marine Corps League, a co-sponsor of the event. "With its displays of artifacts from WWII and its sizeable collection of vehicles, the museum is a special place that everyone should have a chance to visit."

Regular admission applies to non-Marine visitors, and the general public is warmly invited to attend. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for veterans and seniors, and $3 for children; Wright Museum members and children 8 and under are free.

The Wright Museum of WWII History is located at 77 Center St. near downtown Wolfeboro. For more information and directions, call 569-1212 or visit www.wrightmuseum.org.
