Soldier held in alleged sexual assault

NAHA, Japan, Feb. 21 — The military took an army member into custody in the middle of this month for an alleged sexual assault on a Philippine woman in Okinawa Prefecture, investigative sources told Kyodo News on Wednesday.
The prefectural police plan to seek an arrest warrant soon on suspicion that he had raped the woman, based on a claim filed by her.
The incident follows the alleged rape of a Japanese junior high school girl by a 38-year-old Marine staff sergeant on Feb. 10.
The alleged rape, combined with other recent incidents involving U.S. military personnel, prompted the Japanese government to seek stricter discipline among such personnel.
The U.S. military on Wednesday imposed an around-the-clock curfew on all its personnel in Okinawa as part of its disciplinary measures amid an uproar in Japan.
The latest incident took place in the main Okinawa island’s central area in mid-February, sources familiar with the case said, adding factual circumstances have yet to be fully revealed.
In addition to the alleged rape on Feb. 10, a 22-year-old Marine was arrested Monday over drunken driving in the city of Okinawa and another Marine, aged 21, was held for trespassing after he was found passed out on a sofa at a private residence in Nago in the southernmost Japanese prefecture.
