L.I. Sailor Killed in '83 Beirut Attack Is Honored

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (AP) -- A sailor from Long Island is being honored almost a quarter-century after he and 240 fellow sailors, soldiers and Marines were killed in a terrorist bombing on their barracks in Beirut.

A portion of Smith Road was being renamed Monday in honor of Joseph P. Milano, a petty officer third class from Farmingville who was killed Oct. 23, 1983.

Milano, a 1979 graduate of Sachem High School, was chosen for the honor after a police detective and fellow Sachem graduate contacted Congressman Tim Bishop and Brookhaven Supervisor Brian Foley.

Bishop and Foley were among the dignitaries presiding at the street renaming ceremony at the intersection of Smith Road and Midland Boulevard.
