Valentine’s Day is a little more than a week away -- and while plenty of folks here in the east are getting ready for the special day, folks in Onslow County are making sure the men and women serving our country overseas don't get left out either.

The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department dropped off more than a thousand Valentine’s Day cards made by school children and youth groups from all over the county Monday morning.

They'll be going to the hundreds of single Marines from Air Station New River defending our country in Iraq and Africa.

“I've been deployed three times and when this stuff comes in, it brightens your day,” said Sgt. Joseph Dickens III, president of the Single Marines Program at New River. “You can be sitting there out on the ship -- you can be out there a good 45 days before you get mail. And then all of a sudden, the mail comes in.

“It just brightens your whole day. You read these little letters from the kids and the community, and it just gives you the warm and fuzzies inside.”

This is the fourth year the Onslow Parks and Rec. Department and the Single Marine Program have partnered up to send the Valentines.
