Berkeley Wants Marines Out of Town
Contra Costa Times | January 31, 2008
BERKELEY, Calif. - Hey-hey, ho-ho, the Marines in Berkeley have got to go.

That's the message from the Berkeley City Council, which voted 8-1 Jan. 29 to tell the Marines that its Shattuck Avenue recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

In addition, the council voted to explore enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines, and officially encouraged the women's peace group Code Pink to impede the work of the Marines in the city by protesting in front of the station.

In a separate council item, the council voted 8-1 to give Code Pink a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.

Councilman Gordon Wozniak voted no on both items.

The Marines have been in Berkeley for a little more than a year, having moved from Alameda in December of 2006. For about the past four months, Code Pink has been protesting in front of the station. :devious:

They want me out of their city? How about they get the hell out of my country?

Oh wait, that's right. It is because of Marines like me that ensure they have to freedom to spew and pass whatever dumb city-wide directives they want and say whatever they want in their little town hall meetings without having to worry about being hung by a rope on mainstreet and their family tortured, raped, and killed in the middle of the night by terrorists.

Your welcome.

Since they obviousley don't stand behind the Marines, they are more than welcome to stand infront of them.

The Dept.of Navy has been a part of San Francisco's East Bay Area history from the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, The Naval Supply Depot, The Naval Air Station, and Treasure Island (Yerba Buena Island). It's a darn shame that the Marines have told that they are not welcome BUT it is certainly not surprising to anyone familiar with this areas history.
My guess is that all this hostility towards the military started way back in the year 1942. Read on.

Treasure Isle Goes to Navy

City Upset Over Offer, May Dispute Price
The Navy formally served notice today that from now it is the owner of Treasure Island, where it has maintained a base under a lease from the city for more than a year.
The Navy offered the city $44,801 to pay for improvements made to the island. The city is expected to go to court and ask for a larger sum.
There will be no litigation, however, over possession of the island. The Navy spiked that possibility by filing a “declaration of taking and deposit,” instead of instituting condemnation proceedings. In other words, the Navy said: “The island is ours, and that’s final,” instead of: “We’d like to have Treasure Island.”
Shortly after the declaration was filed, Federal Judge St. Sure signed it, giving the Navy title to the island.
Several city officials indicated they did not consider $44,801 sufficient compensation for improvements—such as utilities, roadways and other items. Utilities Mgr. Cahill hinted he had hoped for as much as $500,000, to be used for airport improvements possibly for relocating the Bayshore Highway so as to provide for expansion of San Francisco Municipal Airport.
Considerable dispute appeared likely over the complicated matter of the city’s compensation. From the time it was dredged from the bottom of the Bay, for the Golden Gate International Exposition, until the Navy took over, the island cost $7,874,318.01, of which the city and county, largely though public subscription, invested $3,691,000 for permanent improvements. The city looked to the time when the island might be the site of a metropolitan airport.
Mr. Cahill and City Atty. O’Toole did not consider $44,801 enough—still, there are rumors the Navy might offer a check for $1.
In filing the Navy’s declaration of taking, M. Mitchell Bourquin, special assistant attorney general, explained the Navy needs the 300-acre island for “protection of navigation and commerce” and “for preparing and receiving and forwarding men to naval duty.”
Mr. Bourquin contended that the Bay area in which the island was constructed was navigable water long before California became a state and hence was primarily under Federal jurisdiction. He said purposes for which the city might want the island were secondary to the Navy’s needs.
It was emphasized by both Mr. Bourquin and city officials that the compensation offered by the Navy was merely for improvements to the island, and was far from representing the actual value of the island itself.
In a statement made public as the declaration was filed, Rear Adm. J. W. Greenslade, 12th Naval District commandant, declared Treasure Island “has become a vital necessity in meeting the Navy’s requirements.”
Admiral Greenslade said that “from the viewpoint of peacetime developments it is believed permanent acquisition of Treasure Island for the use of the Navy will increase and promote the efficiency of the Navy and the prosperity of the commercial activities of the Bay Area.”
“The Navy Department is doing everything in its power to intensify its efforts to achieve ultimate total victory at the earliest possible date,” said Admiral Greenslade. “It is the Navy’s responsibility to maintain the fleet and military forces abroad as well as at home. With the progress of the war in the Pacific, San Francisco Bay has assumed an importance far greater than ever before as a naval operating base in the theater of military and naval operations. Treasure Island, located in the heart of the Bay, has become a vital necessity in meeting the Navy’s requirements.

Presents the Facts
"While no other justification is or should be required in connection with the condemnation proceedings which have not be instituted to acquire Treasure Island, and my remarks are not so intended, certain facts with regard thereto may be of interest to the citizens of San Francisco who have always displayed a willingness to co-operate with the Navy.
“In accordance with settled policy, permanent improvements which the Navy requires on Treasure Island may not be erected so long as the island is in the category of leased property. Title to the island must first be acquired by the United States in order to obtain necessary appropriations for the permanent improvements. Accordingly, the secretary of the Navy has announced that title to the island must be acquired.
“Prior to the present condemnation proceedings, the city was advised that the Navy would prefer to acquire title to Treasure Island under the terms of an enabling act, and was requested to submit the minimum price which the city would demand as compensation.
“Many local groups in San Francisco have heartily indorsed the Navy’s program. Unfortunately, certain groups have not found it possible to accept the Navy’s viewpoint in the solution of this problem and have advised against any transfer of title to Treasure Island under the enabling act or otherwise.

No Alternatives
“This attitude was impressed upon and adopted by the city officials. Under the circumstances the Navy had no alternative other than the institution of condemnation proceedings.
Recent editorials in some local newspapers have indicated that the 12th Naval District has an untoward interest in the acquisition of title to Treasure Island by the United States. It goes without saying that the commandant and his staff have considered the problem solely from the national point of view.”

Ever read the personals section of the Berkely Barb? Hardly PC. but I know what you mean. LOL. Berkley is a two headed bullsh*tter. How far the citizenry allows the B.S. to grow has certainly been up to what the community feels is necessary to the interests of a few. Some good things have happened like the no smoking laws, but there doesn't seem to be a an active political counter balance to offset anything radical in nature.

Heartening to know we old farts still know the difference between politically correct a**holes and real americans.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. Still More on Berkeley vs USMC issue

I watched the video of the protesters blocking the entrance to the recruiting office while the Berkeley police maintained their “neutral stance,” meaning they failed to enforce the law. One of the most disgusting episodes I have seen. I applaud Mr. Brian Dennard for firing back—below.

Berkeley (clerk@Berkeley) to Marine Corps: You're Not Welcome

BERKELEY, Calif. Local officials in this liberal city say it's time for the U.S. Marines to move out.
The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and "if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests."
The measure passed this week by a vote of 8-1.

Now check this out, here is a letter a businessman wrote to the Mayor of Berkeley.
Is this a great country or what?

[GF]

Dear Mayor Bates,

In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in the Berkeley, California metro area.

In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone living in the Berkeley area.

In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts , all suppliers of Yacht materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.

Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior, currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos: Porto Hussong, www.portohussong.com (http://www.portohussong.com/) 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.

I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever, Berkeley, Ca.

Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to recommend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and CHARITIES of every kind.

You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.

I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising from that obnoxious, sickening stance.

Cordially,

Agreed, my youthful non political impression of Wyoming was that of a common sense state. Driving nine-oh on a day off into town before the bank closes, a cop approaches from the other direction and glances down at his speedometer then looks at me and throws up his hands! Well i didn't slow down directly and soon enough he has me pulled over. He walks up slappin the dust with his uniform hat and says whats your name? Dave Mims. Damn, Dave?! At least you could slow down so i don't have to change out the air filter in this old cruiser. And he turns drives away.

This other county mountie and part time cowboy would occasionally visit the Jbar9 early in the morning towards the end of his run, for a mug of coffee. He took cream and sugar so the foreman spiked it. Wow thats good! whats in it? Bailey's want another shot? Well just a splash i cant be driving drunk. He then proceeds to explain how he cyphers the drinking and driving laws in his corner of the cowboy state...

It's actually kinda simple, most people around here drink beer, peach schnapps and wiskey. The way i see it you can drive with an open container of beer between your chaps and a couple three empties on the floor if your not drunk, its your call unless i see it different. You can pick up a pint of schnapps at the drive thru liquor window and drink it on the way home but if its wiskey you should cork and cache it out of reach or i might have to give you grief over it.

...How about the drunk cowboy who tries to ride his horse into the cantina? Oh man thats a wreck waiting to happen and i gotta nip that in the bud.

Ya know it's a little Ironic that to understand what it is like to be a person willing to sacrifice for your country, you have to make the commitment, and scrifice by joining a service.

The point I am trying to make is these sh*tbirds will never know the feeling of real patriotism because they are not willing to put their life on the line for their country or the man/woman next to them and their freedom, and rights they yell at a protest that they have.

My step-son although in the Army is as I type this getting ready to deploy to Afganistan for his 4th, tour. He could have gotten out of the Army twice now, but he has his Grandfathers Marine spirit and will not abandon his fellow soldiers. He is as close to being a Marine without actually being one I have ever met.

That is why when I see whese scum disrespecting the Marines, and our military in general, I become enraged.

Marines say they will stay in Berkeley (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1963527/posts)

The U.S. Marine Corps said today it would hold its ground in Berkeley after the City Council asked it to abandon its recruiting office on Shattuck Avenue earlier this week, while the city's mayor retreated a bit.
"We take an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, and part of the Constitution is the right of free speech, and the fact that they are exercising their rights solidifies our resolve to continue what we are doing," Gunnery Sgt. Pauline Franklin said.
Franklin added that the service "can't predict the future" about its presence in Berkeley.
The council voted 6-3 Tuesday to tell the Marines that their recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."
In a separate vote, the council supported the women's peace group Code Pink by giving it a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.
Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, a former U.S. Army captain, released a statement today saying the council's action was not intended to show disrespect for those in uniform and that he would seek changes to the resolution's wording.
"I understand that there are people across the country that may not agree with this action but it is the Berkeley City Council's responsibility to represent the will of the people of Berkeley," he said.
"I also understand that the language proposed to the council did not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces and our opposition to the Iraq war policy. I will be working with the council to clarify that language at our next meeting."
Meanwhile, protesters from the anti-war group World Can't Wait chained themselves to the recruiting station this morning and tried to prevent people from entering. Several scuffles broke out, and one protester was punched in the face. Berkeley police were on the scene trying to keep order.
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-South Carolina, has threatened to introduce legislation to strip the city of federal funds as a result of the City Council's vote.
"This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families," DeMint wrote on his Web site. "The First Amendment gives the city of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can't show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts.
"I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren't forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps."
Among the funding DeMint seeks to remove is $87,000 for the Berkeley Unified School District's nutrition education program.
"If there's a senator from South Carolina that wants to take healthy food away from the children of Berkeley because the City Council has an issue with the military recruiting downtown, I just think that's absurd," said Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services for the district. "We're in the throes of a health crisis (because of childhood obesity), and Berkeley is one of the very few cities in America that's actually really working on children's health through school food. Why anyone would want to take away healthy food away from children is just beyond me."

[quote=PatriotGirl422]Eww that's nasty. I was always insecure about my chest, but after seeing that, I think I'm pretty happy with myself!

I'm sure if you posted bikini shots we would ALL give you lots of confidence.

Hey, I can't believe the rest of you Devil's didn't storm the breastworks on that one!!!!

And...that's an original civil war quote, so don't get all fired up over it LOL.

As far as 'breasts not bombs' and all that, there is NO way I would post that stuff here. In their case, they truly have no shame. I guess the 'shock' value is what they are looking for. As in "I'm SHOCKED you would show those pathetic things in public."

Or, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! MY EYES....THE BURNING....AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!"

PG, I'm gonna let the other line you stated in that post, just lie there on the floor, untouched. Because I'm a gentleman, naturally. If you go back and look at it, you'll see EXACTLY what I mean.

Yeah, I have yet to meet a Marine who is scared of any thing that is Naked!

If someone wants to join our Corps, but is squeemish about some naked guy standing in the door way to the recruiting office, they probably should look to another service anyways...

Yeah, I have yet to meet a Marine who is scared of any thing that is Naked!..Yea, and naked is one thing, but how about neked? Does everyone know the difference between naked and neked? Naked means you don't have any clothes on. Neked means you don't have any clothes on AND you're up to something. :p :p

Marines aren't going anywhere. Not sure where you are going with this? But whatever happens with how the civilians act and treat us is the purpose of why we shed our blood. Free world. It does sadden me that now we have to come home and fight more battles with our own people. for them to turn on the very people that give them the right to have that voice of opinion. "Scared" wrong choice of words to use.

I understand what Catherine was saying, basically (and correct me if I am wrong Cpl.) questioning the thought process (if any...) of the protesters who think that protesting naked is going to offend any of us when we are supposedly out there commiting these heinous war crimes...I guess they are protesters for a reason, they cant find any legitimate careers.
