Japanese, Russian troops at Camp Pendleton

By: North County Times -

CAMP PENDLETON -- There's an international flavor at Camp Pendleton this week as Japanese and Russian troops are conducting training and exchanging cultural information with local Marines.

About six Russian naval infantry officers are scheduled to visit the base's new "infantry immersion trainer" today and trade ideas about tactics used in counterterrorism and combat operations, according to a statement issued by the base.

While relations between the U.S. and Russia have improved dramatically since the end of the Cold War, there are reports of increasing tension over issues such as Iran and what some perceive as bullying by the Bush administration.

The Russian visit comes as more than 100 members of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force are training with members of Camp Pendleton's I Marine Expeditionary Force in an annual exercise dubbed "Iron Fist."

The Japanese troops will be at the base through the middle of February to work on amphibious training as well as individual and unit training.

Japan's military has been limited to self-defense as a condition of its 1945 surrender to the U.S. and its allies ending World War II.
