Twin brothers Cpl. Ryan Mobley and Spc. Matthew Mobley, 21, of Highlands Ranch, recently were awarded Purple Hearts after being wounded while on duty in Iraq.

According to the twins' father, Mike Mobley, Ryan's vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) Aug. 29, 2007, in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. The vehicle contained eight Marines, all of whom received injuries. Mike said the most severe injuries were a broken back and neck, and fractures to lower limbs. All eight Marines were knocked unconscious and all had their ear drums burst from the concussion blast.

Ryan received two broken ear drums, a grade three concussion and various other scrapes and bruises from the blast. Ryan took command, positioned other Marines into defensive positions around the vehicle, removed the injured from the vehicle and called in the air "medevac" for his injured team members, after which he was air medevaced also.

Ryan was awarded his Purple Heart during a formal ceremony Jan. 22 at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Ryan said he was just doing his job.

Matthew received his wounds Feb. 5, 2007, on a mission near Balad, Iraq, Mike said. He also was hit by an IED and received nine shrapnel wounds, requiring more than two hours of surgery.

The most serious wound, Mike said, was a piece of shrapnel that was wedged against his pelvis. All pieces were removed successfully and he has made a full recovery. Matthew was awarded his Purple Heart in Iraq in May 2007.

Ryan now has a garrison job at Camp Pendleton as the manager of the fitness center, Semper Fitness, Mike said. Matthew currently is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., home of the 82nd Airborne. He is scheduled out in May of 2009, so he most likely will have one more deployment.

The Mobleys graduated from Highlands Ranch High School in 2004.
