Fifteen combat-wounded service members from the San Diego Naval Medical Center toured the aircraft carrier Nimitz on Friday, the second day of the ship's deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

It was the first time that local amputees visited an aircraft carrier at sea, and Navy officials plan to arrange similar trips in the future, said Lt. Cmdr. Joe Fikes, a Naval Air Forces spokesman.

Crew members on the Nimitz applauded as the wounded troops and Marines stepped out of the C-2 Greyhound that flew them to the ship. The guests watched flight operations and listened to a briefing by a Marine pilot.

The Nimitz's commanding officer, Capt. Michael Manazir, had invited the injured troops after visiting the naval hospital recently. –S.L.
