CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The first annual Marine Buddy Challenge took place on Saturday at Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte. Marines at Camp Al-Taqaddum, Iraq were also able to participate in the event!

A video teleconference (VTC) link was set up between Reedy Creek Park and Camp Al-Taqaddum, Iraq, where two Council members (currently deployed to that war zone) coordinated a simultaneous competition.

This teleconference was made possible with the assistance of the Charlotte Fire Department. CFD used a grant from the department of homeland security to purchase the field communication unit. CFD deployed the department's field communications unit to Reedy Creek Park. Members of CFD were on hand to man the unit and provide the satellite connection between Charlotte and Camp Al-Taqaddum, Iraq.

Organizers provided private VTC time for local area families to visit with their Marine at Camp Al-Taqaddum, following a period of mutual support offered by each site to competitors of the other site. Michelle Holley and her family were able to talk to their son who was deployed to Iraq five months ago. "I got to see him and as a mom what more can you ask for? He tells you he's ok but when you see him talking to you, and telling you he's ok, then you know he's ok," said Holley.

The two-person team competition tested not only the athletes' running ability, but their overall physical fitness, as well. Teams competed in various calisthenics challenges and a three-mile trail run with backpack. The event simulated the "Physical Fitness Test" each active duty Marine completes twice yearly.

Those involved in the event said it was a unique and wonderful way for members of the public to demonstrate their solidarity with Marines serving in Iraq.
