Fitting tribute

The 241 Marines, sailors and soldiers who were the first U.S. military casualties of terrorism in the Middle East soon could be receiving a fitting tribute.

Scripps Howard News Service reported U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., is proposing that the U.S. Postal Service issue a commemorative stamp in honor of those who died when Islamic Jihad operatives detonated a truck bomb next to their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983.

The stamp would have special significance for Beaver County. One of the Marines who died on the terrible day was Maj. John Macroglou, a 1967 graduate of Center Area High School. He enlisted in the Marines Corps after he graduated from Duquesne University in 1971.

This year will mark the 25th anniversary of the sacrifices of Macroglou and his men. A commemorative stamp would be an excellent way for the nation to honor them.
