i am 17 years old and a senior in highschool. Im due for Parris Island on July 7th but my recruiter said he will try to get me a "volunteer" spot for maybe a few weeks earlier. I plan on going infantry, but am awaiting my papers to return but may have some news tomorrow. I AM A FIGHTER. I know what i am getting into by going infantry and wanting to be a grunt and i am ready for it. One of the main reasons i joined the Corps is because i want to go help the other Marines stationed over in Iraq and Afghanistan. I want to fight beside them.

Bottom Line: is there any way possible to volunteer deployment into combat or to request deployment asap? thanks you

Good on ya!

Welcome. I think by going infantry you will get your wish without too much hassle. Units have a time period where they prep for deployment with training, inspections, etc. Being part of that is a good thing.

I don't think there is anything special you need to do to get in the fight, other than go earn the title!

I AM A FIGHTER

I AM A LOVER!.....But I always enjoy a good fight with ejaculation delight!

Go to boot camp and become a Marine....first and foremost..then go to SOI and go to your unit....PAY ATTENTION...AND LISTEN TO SEASONED COMBAT HARDEN MARINES & VETERANS!

The fight will come to you soon enough..... I applaud your motivation and hard charging attitude.....but,you have NO clue on what you will be getting into when and if you are a registered member of the USMC Fight Club. Take a breath...use you time wisely before you ship in July. Calm down...Rambo just comes out on the big screen today!

The mission of the Marine Corps and achieving the final objective is what will be the key issue. You can volunteer to do anything...however the needs of the Marine Corps is what prevails!

Bottom Line: is there any way possible to volunteer deployment into combat or to request deployment asap? You follow your unit young fellow, wherever they go. In transit you track them down wherever they are. And if it's Diego Garcia, Guam, or Adak, Alaska. Thats where you will go.

It all depends on your unit.

You'll graduate from SOI and be assigned to a unit in the fleet, when you deploy depends on the deployment schedule of the unit you joined. If you think you're going to get to the fleet and volunteer to go straight to the sandbox it's not going to happen, fleet units get boot drops for a reason, they need Marines. So the last thing they're going to do is let you go deploy with another unit.

I know guys who graduated SOI and were in Iraq 10 days later, and then you've got guys who graduate SOI and don't deploy for another 6+ months. It's all luck of the draw, however as a boot you won't be able to just volunteer to deploy when you get to the fleet, you'll deploy when you're told.

so theres nothing i can do except rely on luck? After i graduate boot and before they place me with a unit couldnt i request to be placed with a unit that will be going into combat training soon or maybe even a unit that is being deployed soon? As in, ask and try to do the most i can BEFORE its too late and im already in a unit

Don't get too gung ho they could easily rain on your parade and put you behind a desk, there are no guarantees to what you will do.

I applaud you FeMzZ. I think you are one of the few recuits that had a moto discription about themselves that didn't end in "and then I'm going to become Recon!" Haha, I love it!

(Nothing against people wanting to become Recon)

As Accord explained, it is not so much as luck as the need of the Units. If you are a Victor (deployable) infantry unit, you will find yourself in the right unit. Take whatever training you can get in the meantime.

Last week the second in command promised us at least another 5-10 years in the sandbox...trust me, you will get yours....:tank:

Take me for example. From my day of graduation it will be exactly 1 yr and 1 wk since I got out of SOI before I will have deployed. But I also learned a LOT in that time. And am actually thankful that I got that time. I've met a lot of great Marines with a LOT of things that will help me out in the future. If you have any questoins about what being a grunt and not in country is all about feel free to message me. I can tell you a few good stories :D .

Are you sure you want infantry? Are you really really sure? Think hard about it before you sign up for it. No, you don't specifically volunteer for combat. You go to Iraq when it is your unit's turn to go. You cannot request to be in a unit that is soon to deploy. You will most likely go to a unit that is on a work-up. That unit will have about 7 months to train you before you deploy.

Just be careful what you ask for. I am very happy I became an infantryman but it comes with sacrifices.

You go where the Marine Corps needs you, period. If 2/8 just got back from deployment and they need Marines and it just so happens that your SOI class is graduating at the same time, guess where you're going? That's how it works and you have no say in it whatsoever.... unless your dad is some general who will hook you up like what happened to a Marine in my SOI class who got to go wherever he wanted.

Calm down, there Beavis. Your turn will come, in good time. There will be plenty of fightin, for years to come.

Being motivated is a good thing....but being TOO anxious is going to get you labeled as some kinda squirrel.

Oh, and by the way, don't matter when you leave for boot, graduate, SOI, whatever, as long as you are 17 years old, you aren't leaving CONUS. Presidential order, m'lad. No 17 year olds in combat.

Your time, too, will come. Or not. Relax and enjoy the ride.

Take the time with your family and cherish it while you got it, deployments are long from what I have read and been told...

and ZaCo, not everyone wants to be Recon lol, not me! It would be extremely legit, but that ain't me...Let alone I also don't have some 300pft lol...

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I write to recruits every week. One of them was a hard charger, just like you, then when he got to Parris Island, he turned to puddy. He cried every night, and well.....they ended up sending him home, unfit for military duty! He was at the Rifle Range when they did that, half way thru Boot Camp!

Charge on poolee, enjoy your time left at home and in school. Then survive Boot Camp, Then worry about being a hero! There will be plenty of time for that. If you just do your job and take it day by day, the Corps will take care of geting you into the war!

Take it from an old war horse, war ain't pretty!

Good luck and stay motivated for training.

Like all of these great americans have said, get your training done and pay good attention to everything you are taught. once you are placed in your unit keep your ears open for deployment opprotunities, and jump on them. once i was placed in my unit i soaked up as much knowledge as my brain would let me and i was always the first to volunteer. most of the time i didn't know what i would be doing but my hand went up anyway. after 6 months i got the chance to deploy to iraq with another unit. it worked out for me. keep your head up and stay moto.

Yes, enjoy time at school/family/friends, and I don't think you know what you are getting yourself into. Hell, I talked to my friends dad today who I found out served 20yrs in the Marine Corps and he told me after I told him I leave in a week "I thought I had it figured out, I watched that movie 'DI' and sort of thought it will be hard, but when I got to Parris Island I discovered I had no idea what I got myself into." Then he gave me some bootcamp advice like "stay positive" and "just remember, they can't kill you, just make things painful and sore" I am no Marine yet of course, but I am a High school graduate, and H.S. is something to be cherished. Your time will come...

The infantry is great and all but dont go around saying you're a fighter.
Its boring and you gotta have motivation and patience every damn day you wake up. You'll prove yourself wrong when you get to bootcamp.
When I went in I taught my days would pass by quickly, I knew the training schedule and I taught Id enjoy everything so I wouldnt think about the time.
There was atleast 10 things we did every day that I didnt enjoy and it just slowed down the way I taught. And you couldnt half ass those things or you'd be seen an individual.
So save your motivation.

Reservists sometimes deploy 3 months right after SOI, thats as fast you can get. But you probably dont want to be a Reservist.
