You look out the window and tell us if it's clear, raining or snowing. You stick your finger up and tell us if the wind us blowing. You play with BA-1100-N's with 5t-Ring kits and tell us which direction the wind is blowing.
(and by the way...this IS a serious response).

A meteorologist is a lost science. The weather guesser can only predict or give his or her opine of the weather. The closest they come is when a when a hurricane is going to land and then they don't know where or Mother Nature can throw them for a loop.

Computer technology can tell you allot but who in life can tell you when it's going to rain and where. Not much time for tornado's and earthquakes.

In the Marine Corps a weather station is used for wet and dry bulb reading and calling in the heat conditions and snow predictions in addition what the Sgt said.. It is used allot in the airwing and give the grunts a prediction and leeway on what to do with the field operation.

In civilian life you can get a good job with decent pay starting as an intern at a weather station. This is one job that you are loved and hated at the same time. Good luck!
