While largely California-based Marines helped Iraqis topple a 40-foot statue of Saddam Hussein in a main square of the Iraqi capital Wednesday, many forces from Camp Lejeune worked in and around Baghdad.
The more than 7,000-member 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade known as Task Force Tarawa was in the area of eastern Baghdad.
Members of the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the 2nd Marine Regiment; the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment; and elements of 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion are likely among those under the command of the West Coast-based I Marine Expeditionary Force that recently seized the Al Rashid military air base in the southeast.
Details are still difficult to obtain, but many of these elements are moving quickly through the streets.
