AL QAIM, Iraq, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Iraqi soldiers are training alongside U.S. Marines to facilitate the handover of security to local forces in Iraq.

Iraqi soldiers with the 1st Battalion division trained with U.S. Marines at Combat Outpost North situated in northwest Iraq.

The U.S. Marines said Military Transition Team members joined forces with Marines in the region to assimilate hand-picked Iraqi soldiers into their reactionary drills.

Iraqi troops observed and took place in immediate-action and break-contact maneuvers with Marines in order to train junior Iraqi soldiers in the future.

"It's very important to integrate our training," said Marine Staff Sgt. Charles Cox. "If we don't integrate, and it comes time for us to do a joint operation, not everyone will be on the same sheet of music. Should something happen, everyone needs to know how to react."

The Iraqi troops work with their Marine counterparts on a daily basis to expedite their training and facilitate anticipated redeployments of U.S. forces as Iraq units increase their capabilities.

"It's only a matter of time until we can all go home, and they can be secure in the fact that they have enough knowledge to stand on their own against oppressive forces," said Marine Cpl. Aaron Missey.
