To any Marine on this board:

My godson in Maine told me he was joining the Young Marines. What can anyone tell me about them? Is it like Marine Corps ROTC for high school kids?

Just curious. I've looked at their webpage, and wasn't really sure of what they were about. Do they have DI's? Any information that could be provided would be appreciated.

Jarhead, if I recall correctly, we recently (within the past few months) had a thread from a feller that was an orginal Young Marine and was looking for others. You might find that thread and contact him. Good hunting.

Actually Young Marines takes em much younger than HS...

From what I know they learn Drill movements, history, etc...

It's a good program for young men and women.

We have a detachment in Castle Rock, Co but I haven't gone to see em in action yet but I have spoken via e-mails with the Marine who is the commandant of the local unit, he was a Ssgt when he was in the Corps...

The Columbia River Chapter of Young Marines are like boy scouts but better, similar to outward bound activities. They do where the EG&A on their 'uniforms'http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/images/icons/icon6.gif

jahhead.

Good organization from all my reads. I looked into getting involved, but too far from home for me.

Can I call your attention to this thread. Marine Identifies himself as involved if you had questions....

I've just been appointed Training Ofiicer for our Young Marine Unit, I'll also be teaching drill, Marine Corps History, Military Courtesy, etc. There's a lot to the program and the young Marines have a lot to cover as they advance through the ranks. I'm looking forward to helping build the company and getting to use again what I learned in my 22 and 1/2 year career in the Corps

I'm with the Marine Corps League River Valley Detachment, and the Young Marines River Valley Program in Fort Smith Arkansas. It's a lot of work, but great fun! I'm also looking forward to making the summer programs and training seminars for the Adult Staff of the Young Marines, and yes I very much enjoy hanging out with my Fellow Marines.

I was Im the Young Marines for four years prior to my enlistment in the Marine Corps.

Brief breakdown,

There is a 13 week "boot camp" (once a week) in which you learn drill, history of the Young Marines along with history of the Corps. Customs and courtisies, Drug prevention, Health, Leadership traits, They also do a field excersis for one weekend.

The "boot camp" run by former and current Marine's as well as senior young Marines.

After that they continue to buld upon what they taught in "boot camp" as well as doing community activites.

There are also many trips and schools available to the young Marines, For instance I went to Washington DC for Presedent Clinton's Inaguration (SP?), Leadership school at MCDRSD where actual drill instructors taught us drill classes and PT (this school was the most help to me as I somewhat knew what to expect when I got there for real).

All in all its a great program and helps a lot of youth develop and live up to thier full potential.
