NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Flashback to 1945: U.S. Marines, with Navy medical corpsmen alongside them, were engaging Japanese troops on Iwo Jima in one of the fiercest battles in the history of the Marine Corps.

A local author, Dr. Frank Falgout, has tried to capture the valor and gallantry of the momentous battle in his book, "The Life of a Navy Corpsman: To Marine Corpsman, To Medical Doctor and Beyond."

Members of the Marine Corps League, Holiday, FL Detachment 567, are delighted that one of their own long-time members has penned this work of personal history, according to Joseph S. Baldyga, public relations officer for the detachment.

Falgout served with distinction on Iwo Jima and recounts his experiences there and later in a life

Parts of the book will remind readers of the popular Clint Eastwood film, "Flags of Our Fathers," Baldyga said.

Falgout's own military service included the bloody Iwo Jima campaign with the 4th Marine Division. His post-war career included several years of teaching positions at area hospitals where he was highly respected for his medical expertise and warm manner.

The U.S. Marine Corps does not include medical personnel among its ranks, relying instead on specially trained U.S. Navy medical corpsmen such as Falgout.

Ordinarily the Marine Corps League allows only USMC veterans as members, Baldyga explained, but they now proudly accept for full membership those Navy corpsmen who have served with the Fleet Marine Force.

Falgout's 245-page book is on sale by phone order, for $25 plus shipping and handling.

Or the book may be ordered directly from the publisher, Trafford Publishing, by calling toll-free 1-888-232-4444.
