I was told I will get 30 days vacation as a Marine and I will get to schedule this vacation time. My questions:
-Will the dates I ask off be upheld or can I expect to have changes where I end up not being able to leave on the days I ask off? (Assuming that I am not deployed)
-Can I take up to 2 weeks at a time or do they limit the amount you can leave for to a smaller timespan?
-Any other information on this topic would be appreciated.
Thanks alot,
-Tim

Leave is granted at the discretion of your command.
You earn 2.5 days a month..no sick days!
30 days a year and you put a REQUEST into your command and if they can they let you go.
The mission comes first!
Emergency leave is granted by Red Cross or command authorization ASAP!

There is always the possibility your leave request would be denied. There are training requirements, mission requirements, unit needs, etc, etc. I would assume that your leave wouldn't be denied without valid reason. In regard to taking two weeks at a time, I saw that happen when I was in and in fact, usually took mine in 10 day increments. Again, depends on unit needs, etc. Other information: Don't be late returning from leave!

There is NO excuse for being late. Even my daddy always said, "Leave some "flat" time". Or I have heard it called "just in case - - - - - time".

I checked into my unit on December 28, the next time I was home was December 23- two years later. The next time I got home was February 19, over a year later- and that is when I got out. (But, I did get to take leave to watch my girlfriend at the time graduate from boot camp.) Sometimes leave is just a nice thought. No promise you'll be able to take it.

While I'm thinking about it, there is one thing about leave that drove me nuts. In a "normal" job, you only have to use vacation days to cover days that you work. So, if you work Monday to Friday you would have to take 10 days off in order to be off for two weeks. In fact, 10 days vacation would let you be gone for 16 days. However, in the Marine Corps, you have to take leave days to cover the weekends. It isn't a big deal, but it is aggravating.

Which is why I will never take more than 5 days leave, or more than 3 days next to a 96.

It's that way cause your arshe ALWAYS belongs to the Corps, 24/7!! ROTFLMAO Even when you're carrying your liberty card for the evening, you're STILL working and subject to RECALL!!:bunny:

Br03, unless they changed things recently, 3 days with a 96 is still a rip off, because you had to check back in to be "off leave" and then go on the 96.
I simply lived too far from base to really do that though. 5 days was a waste of time. If I would have lived closer to base I would do that though.
This is what happened for the Christmas 96. I took Thursday and Friday off, checked in at 0730 Saturday morning (start of 96). I wanted more days, but if I would have taken them they would have been during the 96, so, no go.
96s during weekends makes no sense to me. What does the Marine Corps do if Christmas falls on a Wed?

That depends on the command. And what the deployment schedule is. If it falls on Wed, and I can't remember if any of ours did or not since we were deployed most of the time, I *think* you would get Tuesday noon to Saturday noon as a 96 if they were granted that way.
Some units I was in did 'block leave', you either got Christmas leave or New years, and didn't have to worry about the 96's.

I "know" of a unit that had a 96 that expired on a Saturday. The Marines had to "check in" by making a phone call to the platoon sgt.

Yep...I remember that as well. Wasn't a Christmas one tho.
My unit will not authorize leave for anyone unless it's a dedicated leave block such as pre-deployment leave or Christmas leave. There are guys in my unit with 50-60 days saved up and aren't allowed to take it except for like 6 days over Christmas.
