MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.-- Lt. Gen. Keith J. Stalder, the commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force, presented the “Lt. Gen. Chesty Puller” Outstanding Leadership Award to the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, here, Dec. 19.

The award was presented to 2nd Medical Battalion for professional achievement and superior performance in training, equipping and mentoring Marines and Sailors, as well as exceeding unit mission requirements from Oct. 1, 2006 to Sept. 30, 2007.

“I appreciate the opportunity to present this award,” Stalder said. “It is all about leadership, doing the right thing, mentoring, coaching and taking care of each other. Nobody does it better than 2nd Medical Battalion. (This award) is a testament to the leadership of this great organization.”

According to the unit’s award citation, 2nd Medical Battalion displayed continued attentiveness to the welfare, preservation and readiness of its Marines and Sailors, while maintaining noteworthy training and equipment readiness. From supporting all II MEF units conducting combat operations to providing individual augments to units, 2nd Medical Battalion “performed in an exemplary manner”.

“One factor we look for when we (select the award winners) is the relative challenges the unit has with respect to operational tempo and the number of diverse missions they must accomplish,” Stalder explained. “There is a degree of difficulty that weighs heavily into the selection. (Second Medical Battalion) supports the entire MEF and they do it both deployed and in garrison. They take care of the medical needs of over 50,000 Marines and Sailors deployed and back home.”

“Second Medical Battalion serves a critical role within II MEF,” Stalder added. “We can’t go to war without the Navy, whether it’s medical care, seabees or chaplains. The biggest component of the Navy team is our doctors. They have been a part of the Marine Corps team since 1775 and we could not do what we do without them.”

Sgt. Maj. R.D. Himsworth, the sergeant major of II MEF, explained that the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Medical Battalion provide not only a top notch medical service, but provide Marines, as well as other service members, a boost of confidence in knowing the capabilities of the professionals watching over them.

“Our young Marines, and soldiers attached to (Marine units), would do anything because they know that within an hour, they would be under some of the best medical care in the world,” Himsworth said.

According to Col. Steven J. Thompson, the commander of 2nd MLG, the battalion’s commitment to protecting Marines and Sailors is evident.

“I’d like to congratulate the command of the battalion,” said Col. Steven J. Thompson, commander of 2nd MLG. “This award is all about leadership. I’m extremely proud of their accomplishment.”
