Gun Shop Owners Raising Money For Marines
By Luke Anderson landerson@post-journal.com

As a local marine is about to be redeployed to Iraq, some area residents are trying to raise money to provide his unit with some necessary equipment.

Sgt. Andrew Smith and his 2nd Marine Headquarter Group, Team 22, will ship out to Anbar province Jan. 6 for a planned seven-month deployment assisting the Iraqi Highway Patrol.

The 13 marines in the group have decided they need a special sight on their sidearms that the government doesn’t provide.

The sights are too expensive for the marines to buy themselves.

So Smith’s grandmother, Lucile Frost, decided to organize a fund-raiser to try to provide the sights to the men. Mrs. Frost and her husband, Bill, own Bill’s Gun and Saddle Shop.

The goal is to raise $3,000 to cover the cost of providing the crimson trace red dot laser sights for use with their beretta sidearms, ‘‘which the men feel will make their weapons much more effective in saving lives,’’ according to Mrs. Frost.

She said the sights will help the men with their targeting in self-defense situations, especially in the dusk and dawn or at night.

There are donation canisters in three locations, the Community Bank in Falconer, the Sinclairville Superette and Bill’s Gun and Saddle Shop in Sinclairville.

Mrs. Frost would also like to see canisters put in locations in Panama, Sherman and Clymer, where Smith was raised.

Smith, who enlisted with the Marines following his high school graduation in 1997, is gearing up for his third deployment to Iraq.

If the drive raises more than the $3,000 goal, the extra money will be used to provide care packages to the Marines during their deployment.

‘‘We pray for their safe return, and we’d like to do what we can to help them while they’re there,’’ Mrs. Frost said.

Donations can be sent to 2nd MHG Team 22, C/O Community Bank, 1982 E. Main St., Falconer, NY 14733 or to Mrs. Lucile Frost, 39 Prospect St., Sinclairville, NY 14782.
