Hello everyone. I have a question about the Global war on Terrorism Service Medal. I was told by a fellow Marine that we are authorized to wear this medal thirty days after graduating ITB. He says he was told by a Staff Seargent that knows all about medals and awards but I want to be sure. I currently am still in student status at Marine Corps Security Forces Training Co. So as a student, will I still rate this medal thirty days after graduating from ITB? I've looked up the criteria for being awarded this medal but I am still unsure. Thanks all.

When in doubt don't wear it. As a student I would think that you don't rate it yet, however, you never know. When you get to your SF's unit then you can ask someone from the Admin shop there. Until then, it really doesn't matter does it, you're not getting anymore pay from it are you?

Maybe the mods could post either that thread..or even better...a short and sweet QnA about medals and awards section....uniforms, etc.

To answer the question, NO, you don't rate it, because you are NOT in the FMF yet. After you spend 30 days in the FMF (or at your actual duty station) in a NON student status, AND your commander recommends you for the award, you will rate to wear it. NOT before, unless your SNCOIC at school says otherwise. (For example, if you are standing real world 'gate duty' as an augmentee, or some such, for a period of time, you *might* qualify). The 30 day in the Fleet rule is USUALLY stuck to pretty closely, but different commands view this different ways.

When it shows up in your SRB or online records, you rate it. Until then...don't wear it.
