PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- The U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet commissioned a new Pascagoula-built USS San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship dubbed the Mesa Verde on Saturday along Florida's Gulf Coast.

The ship was built at the Northrop Grumman Shipyards in Pascagoula and will be based in Norfolk, Va. It is the third San Antonio-class ship built by Mississippi's largest private employer.

Cmdr. Shawn Lobree, of Miami, is the ship's first commanding officer. He will lead a crew of 360 officers and enlisted personnel.

The Mesa Verde is capable of launching and recovering two amphibious landing craft, hosting rotary-wing aircraft and carrying and launching 14 Marine Corps expeditionary fighting vehicles.

The ship, named for the Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado, is 684 feet long, 105 feet wide and capable of carrying a landing force of 800 Marines.
