BROKEN BOW, Neb. — Family and friends of a Nebraska man killed while working for a security firm in Iraq described him as a caring man who enjoyed his work in the Middle East.

Michael B. Doheny, 30, of Omaha and two of his co-workers were killed Sunday when a roadside bomb detonated near their security convoy southeast of Baghdad. Another man was seriously hurt.

The men all worked as security specialists contracted from Tetra Tech EC Inc. of Morris Plains, N.J., according to the Coalition Munitions Clearance Program, which has headquarters at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., and is responsible for disposing of captured ammunitions in Iraq.

“He loved his job in Iraq, and he loved being over there,” said his wife of six years, Melissa.

Doheny went to Iraq on Aug. 26, but he had been there two other times, according to his wife. He started working with Tetra Tech in 2005, after serving eight years in the Marines.

Melissa Doheny said her husband’s body would likely return to Nebraska in the next five days. It will be escorted by Michael’s brother, Robert Kugler, a Marine serving in Iraq.

A funeral in Doheny’s hometown of Broken Bow was being planned.

Along with his wife and brother, Doheny is survived by his mother, Kathy Kugler of Broken Bow.

Melissa Doheny described Michael as family oriented. “He was always referred to as the glue that held our family together,” she said.

The military identified the other victims in Sunday’s attack as Steven Evrard, 36, of Arlington, Texas; and Micah Shaw, 32, of Vancouver, Wash.

The Army said the attack was under investigation.

Forty-three contractors working for the program have been killed since September 2003. Workers handle and destroy captured munitions at several locations in Iraq.

A spokeswoman for Tetra Tech said the three men worked for a security company, SOC-SMG Inc., which was a subcontractor for Tetra Tech. The security firm is based in Minden, Nev.
