Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island firefighters celebrated the construction of a new training building Monday by setting it on fire.

The steel training building on Page Field was bought in May for $150,000 to give Parris Island firefighters a chance to practice their skills on a real, working fire, according to fire department Capt. Doug Peake.

Customizations were finished in June, but Monday was the first opportunity firefighters had to practice with the building.

Eventually, firefighters will ignite and extinguish the building every three months, Peake said.

"You have a whole lot of control over the entire situation," he said. "The government has such a stringent fire-inspection program that we don't see live fire that often."
