Kerry calls for more troops to Afghanistan

WASHINGTON —Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said he wants the U.S. and its allies to send 5,000 more troops to Afghanistan to help quell rising violence there.
Afghanistan marks the front line in the fight against terrorism, Kerry said, citing a dramatic increase in the number of suicide bombings and other violence there this year. Taliban and al-Qaida forces have regrouped along the Afghan-Pakistan border, Kerry added.
The senator urged the U.S. to lean hard on its NATO allies for help. More troops would make the military less reliant on airstrikes, which he said result in civilian casualties and inflame public opinion in the Muslim world against the U.S.
Some military officials have recently proposed moving Marines out of Iraq and into a greater role in Afghanistan.
