TV Producer says military responsible for training injury

By: North County Times

SAN DIEGO -- Stu Segall, who runs a motion picture and TV studio in San Diego and a separate company that runs training scenarios for Marines, testified Monday that the Marines are "absolutely" to blame for an incident that left a Marine injured.

Former Marine Pfc. Jesse Klingler is suing Stu Segall Productions Inc., which is Segall's production company, as well as Strategic Operations Inc., which provides realistic training scenarios for Marines. Klingler is seeking more than $1 million.

Klingler, 21, suffered a career-ending injury Sept. 18, 2004, after he was bound, gagged and shot at close range with blank ammunition during a simulated prisoner interrogation.

An actor pressed an AK-47 to Klingler's upper knee and shot him with blank ammunition. There was no bullet, but rather a high-intensity burst of gas that left Klingler wounded.

Segall's attorney, Mike Neil, has told the jury the prisoner interrogation of Klingler was an impromptu punishment dreamed up by Klingler's superiors -- punishment for a critical mistake Klingler made during the training. Neil also said Klingler is overstating the seriousness of the injury.

Witness testimony is expected to continue through the week.
