Devil Dog Paintball Park will offer Marines playtime in their own backyard Lance Cpl. Laura A. Mapes
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz(Nov. 29, 2007) -- You have the perfect cover and concealment. You can see him but he can’t see you, and you only have eight rounds left. You have to make each one count. While this may sound like a combat zone, it is only a game of paintball.
Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station Yuma will be able to play paintball on station starting Dec. 1 at the grand opening of Devil Dog Paintball Park. The field will be open to anyone who has access to the station.
“Marines kept suggesting that we should put a paintball field on station so we did,” said Bill Cardenas, Arizona Adventures manager.
“There had been a paintball field on station in the past, so we took that area and fixed it up,” explained Cardenas. Production of the park started in mid October.
With a few helping hands from the station grounds maintenance department they leveled the ground in the whole area, which spans about 100 by 180 feet, and planted wooden posts to set the perimeter.
“Besides the tractors used to haul the equipment, we (the Arizona Adventures staff and station grounds maintenance) have done all of the work ourselves,” commented Cardenas.
“I always believe in taking care of the Marines and I wanted to give them somewhere they can play,” he said.
Cardenas explained that the cost would be substantially cheaper to play on station than anywhere out in town, although the price hasn’t been set yet.
“Our hopes are that it will promote camaraderie and teamwork, and it will give Marines something cheap to do on base,” said Lance Cpl. Jakob Bernier, Marine Aviation Logistic Squadron 13, ground support and equipment operator, who is helping with the production of Devil Dog Paintball Park.
“If people take advantage of this it will be great,” Bernier commented.
While paintball is mostly fun and games, there will be rules enforced at the park.
One of the safety rules states that field approved goggles will be worn at all times in any shooting area. The rules also state that the field is BYOP, which means bring your own paintballs; however, paintballs can be purchased at Arizona Adventures.
The rules will be strictly enforced at Devil Dog Paintball Park.
All of the equipment you need to play on the field will be available for rental at Arizona Adventures.
While this is not an actual combat zone it does provide the opportunity to work on cover and concealment so when it comes down to the wire and you only have eight rounds left, just remember, it’s just a game.
