The 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, is scheduled to start a joint exercise with about 600 Marines and aircraft deployed to Kadena from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, according to an Air Force news release.

The Marines, most with 12th Marine Aircraft Group, were to start arriving Thursday.

The group also brought about 30 F/A-18 Hornets, which will operate mainly at Kadena and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

According to the release, the wing plans to integrate the Marines and their aircraft into the Monday-to-Friday exercise, during which the two services “will practice mobilization procedures, hone technical skills and enhance operational readiness.”

Starting Tuesday, sirens, speaker systems, ground burst simulators and smoke canisters will be used as part of the exercise. Wing leaders review the placement of such training tools “to ensure impacts on surrounding communities are minimized as much as possible,” the release said.

The Marines will continue training at Kadena until Dec. 12.
