The Hi-Desert Star’s View: It’s not just family who need holiday cards

’Tis the season for holiday cards, jolly and silly, or elegant and religious. But while you’re buying boxes of cards to send to all those people on your mailing list, please set aside a few to mail to perfect strangers. Several organizations offer conduits to send cards to people in the most need of cheer.

This is a meaningful and simple way to contribute to Christmas charities, and it’s comparatively inexpensive, too — if you can’t afford to give money or toys to the less fortunate, you still might be able to participate in the holiday tradition of giving by spending a dollar or two on stamps and two or three cards.

And by the way, although we’re using the term “Christmas” here, Hanukkah begins at sundown Dec. 4, and more Hanukkah cards are available in stores this year than ever.

You might just slip the cards into mailboxes of people you think could use a friendly greeting this time of year.

You can also contact a local group or business that serves a population you particularly want to send cards to — like veterans’ organizations and nursing homes.

Here are two local organizations to get you started:

Tender Loving Christmas sends cards to a variety of people who tend to be isolated and alone on the holidays. For information, call 366-9012 or stop by 57230 Twentynine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley’s Food 4 Less Shopping Center.

Aboard the Twentynine Palms Marine base, the Single Marines Program manages Desert Mail Call, in which greetings can be sent to deployed Marines and sailors. Send cards to Desert Mail Call, P.O. Box 6145, Twentynine Palms, CA 92278. For information, call 830-4767.
