Army-Navy Week [W. Thomas Smith Jr.]
This is Army-Navy Week, the week before two of America's finest institutions come together for one of the greatest rivalry games in college football: Also known as the gridiron battle between the Black Knights from (as one reader says) "the gray school on the Hudson" and the Midshipmen from "George Bancroft's School for Wayward Boys."
Whether we attended those schools or not, all of America is proud of her military academies at West Point (Army), Annapolis (Navy), and Colorado Springs (Air Force), and as such, most of us sports fans feel a certain sense of national pride and bond with those academies' football teams — and let's not forget Air Force is coming off a great regular-season (9-3) by the way. But the Army-Navy matchup is so big, because it is so old, and Army and Navy are the two traditional services. For years, Air Corps and Air Force officers attended West Point, and Marine officers — being members of a sea service — have always attended Annapolis.
So basically this is everybody's game.
According to the Sporting News:
... the [Army-Navy] series began when Cadet Dennis Mahan Michie accepted a challenge from the Naval Academy to play a football game. Navy won that game, 24-0, on Nov. 28, 1890, and the teams will meet this Saturday for the 108th time.
The Super Bowl, in contrast, is a just an infant.
"Our game is way bigger, and I don't think it's even close, from an emotional standpoint and by the people it affects," Army coach Stan Brock said.
The players in the Army-Navy game aren't just playing for themselves or their teammates. From San Diego to Iraq, from Afghanistan to Iran, soldiers at virtually every U.S. military installation in the world will be watching Saturday's game. ...
I seriously doubt there will be any U.S. troops in "Iran" watching the game — unless Sporting News is receiving intelligence that we aren't — but you get the picture: The game, played Saturday in Baltimore at the M&T Bank Stadium, will be watched worldwide.
Kickoff is at high noon.
What's on tap for this week? Lots of rivalry pranks like, uhm, goat stealing, maybe some mule-napping.
