A Vietnam Veteran Still Stands Proud

With American forces fighting their way into Baghdad, it’s easy to understand today, why most Americans at home are standing proud and supporting their sons, daughters, sisters and brothers in conflict. This, however, hasn’t always been the case. For over 24 years, many of them lonely and unsupported, former Marine, Jack Cunningham, has struggled with a reluctant Hollywood to convince someone to release films with a positive, truthful and honorable viewpoint of the Vietnam conflict.

Over these years, Cunningham’s struggle has enjoyed the support of such notables as Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart, John Huston, and Michael Landon and a number of producers have kept his project on file, including Spike Lee and Leo DiCaprio.

What Cunningham is working towards is a non-profit production company with the mission of "getting the story straight."

To this end, he has written a number of stories and a script about his experience in the U.S. Marine Corps’ Combined Action Program (CAP), a unit he served in from 1970 to 1971. The purpose of this program was to place Marines in Vietnam villages where they could live 24/7 with the native population and protect them from the communist, Viet Cong terrorists.

Duc Duc, the resettlement village where Cunningham served, surrounded the 5th Marine Combat Base in An Hoa Valley, approximately 20 miles southwest of Da Nang. This area was under constant communist assault.

Today, we watch the Iraqi conflict while reporters are "embedded" with the American and British forces. Thirty-three years ago, Cunningham was "embedded" with the villagers of Duc Duc. His buddies' positive and honorable experiences contributed to his need to get the story straight and his own personal struggle with PTSD.

"It’s often been actually an insulting road, even from those closest to me," he said of his journey.

What we have seen mostly from Hollywood recently is a chorus of protestors whose words border on treason. These are the same words used by their members in the past. We can only hope other members of the Hollywood Community will come forth in support of the CAProductions Project and "set the record straight" on Vietnam. The pride of all the men and women, who served bravely and honorably in Vietnam, should be shared by all of America.
