On this day in American military history:

Battle of Chattanooga (Tenn.) opens between Union Army forces under the command of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant (yes, the future president of the United States) and Confederate Army forces under the command of Gen. Braxton Bragg (yes, Fort Bragg, N.C. is named for him). After two-days fighting, Bragg orders his army to withdraw. Grant wins a key battle against the Confederacy in the West, 1863.
Having suffering heavy losses, U.S. Marines under the command of Gen. Holland M. "Howlin' Mad" Smith crush the remaining Japanese holdouts under Japanese Rear Admiral Keiji Shibazaki (who has committed suicide) on Tarawa and secures the atoll, 1943.
