At least some Marines with the Camp Pendleton-based 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division in central Iraq are fighting with just one meal a day in their bellies ---- a meal that nutritionists say wouldn't provide enough daily energy for a young girl, much less a fighting soldier.

Supply problems have caused troops in the unit to be restricted to a one-meal ration, known as an MRE or meal ready to eat, per day, according to a North County Times reporter traveling with the Marine unit.

That meal provides an average of 1,250 calories, or about a third of the calories recommended for soldiers, said Janice Rosado, a physical scientist with the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center. The center develops MRE's for the military.

"Our recommendation is that they should be issued three MRE's per day," Rosado said. "If someone out there chooses not to issue them three per day, that's unfortunate, but there's nothing we can do about it."
