Even animals wear 'Christmas attire' at parade

Donkey, ponies will strut glitter-painted hooves

TWO RIVERS — Nancie Cayemberg has been busy making capes and bonnets for Saturday's Christmas Fantasy Parade.

"I have made a dozen capes," said Cayemberg, who is participating in the parade for the first time.

More than a dozen people and some animals will be part of her parade entry, which is representing Lakota Ranch and Relay for Life. The ranch, which boards horses, is north of Two Rivers on Highway 42. Families connected to the ranch have a team called Lakota Ranch in the annual Relay for Life cancer fundraiser.

Adults and children will don the old-fashioned Christmas carolers' outfits and sing along with a CD player as they go through the parade route, she said.

But it won't just be humans dressed up for the parade. Four miniature ponies and a miniature donkey will be decked out in "Christmas attire," she said.

The ponies and donkey will wear holiday-themed bareback pads, their reins will be covered with garland, they will have cotton on their halters and glitter paint on their hooves, and "Merry Christmas" will be written on their rumps, according to Cayemberg. The little girls who own the animals will lead them and ride on them.

Kayla Jansky, 9, will be participating with Zeus. It's the first time she has been in a parade with her pony.

"He might be a little naughty, he might be good," she said. "He likes to have ponytails and stuff in his hair and glitter on his butt."

Alysa Katerski, 7, said her pony, Pegasus, also likes ponytails and braids so she thinks she won't mind being decked out for the holidays. Alysa hasn't been in a parade with Pegasus, either, but she isn't concerned about it.

"I don't think she's gonna spook at anything," she said.

Some of the adults will ride full-size horses, and a four-wheeler will pull a decorated pony cart.

Cayemberg said her main reason for participating in the parade is to draw attention to Relay for Life. She said she hopes the ranch will participate in the parade every year — but she's asking people to keep their capes so she doesn't have to repeat that part of the preparation.

The Marines Corps will have a presence in the parade this year for the first time.

Sgt. Joe Ramos of the Marine Corps recruiting office in Manitowoc said he is participating in the parades in Manitowoc and Two Rivers to bring "exposure to the Marine Corps" as well as to "let the kids know about the military."

Ramos said he will be in a 2006 red Hummer, decorated with Marine decals and with a Christmas theme. He said he was hoping for participation by some of the Manitowoc County residents who have enlisted in the Marines through him.

"For the Marines to be (in the parade) for the first time, it's awesome," he said.

There are more entries than usual in this year's parade, according to Mike Zimmer, director of the Two Rivers Main Street program, which organizes the parade.

"We're up about 10 entries," he said.

The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the route is through downtown Two Rivers on Washington Street from 22nd to 16th. Santa Claus will be riding on the last float.

Postal employees will pick up children's letters to Santa during the parade. No stamp is necessary, but Santa would like a return address, according to a press release from the Two Rivers Main Street office.

Santa will visit with children at Color Blind Studios, 2022 Washington St., following the parade.
