MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO-- Service members and civilians aboard the depot started their holiday season off by participating in the annual Marine Corps Community Services Turkey Trot, a 5K fun run, Friday.

This year’s Turkey Trot featured a new course, starting and finishing at the Depot Boathouse and Marina. The alteration was done to give the participants a change of scenery, according to Kelley Sitar, deputy director of Semper Fit.

Twenty sailors from Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Base in Point Loma, Calif., volunteered to help at the registration booths by handing out race numbers and T-shirts to all competitors. They also helped Marines from the Basic Marine Platoon keep order at the finish line.

In addition to the race, the event featured a food drive and the Great MCRD Smoke Out, where personnel could trade their tobacco products for chocolate candy kisses.

Tents were set up to support the holiday food drive by in collecting items needed for the gift baskets that are delivered to Marines and their families each year.

The food drive began Friday and will end Dec. 1. Items that are requested for the basket are peas, carrots, cranberry sauce, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams, gravy packets, popcorn and boxed macaroni and cheese.

"We always try to do better than we did the year before," said Sitar. "This year we received way more donations than we expected. We collected two full bins of each item compared to last year’s one bin."

This was a great opportunity to enjoy the race and entertainment while taking care of our own, said Sitar.

Joseph Galvin won first overall with a time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds. Scott Kerrins finished second with 16:32 and Daniel Chiriboga took third place with a time of 16:47
Kelly Custer was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 19:45, and 11-year-old Wyatt Wilson was the first child to finish the race with a time 21:57 seconds.

The age groups for the race were split every five years from zero to 60 and the first three finishers of every category were presented medals by depot sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Bobby B. Woods.

Before the awards presentations the racers competed in a pumpkin pie-eating Contest. Mahriah Johnson, who finished first place in her age category, won tickets to Universal Studios.

Race participants enjoyed free music, food and drinks. Prizes ranging from tickets to Chargers games to the grand prize of a $400 camcorder were also raffled off to the participants.

The next MCCS run is the St. Patricks Day fun run which will take place next March. To donate items to the food drive, contact Natalie Francisco at (619) 524-9016.
