Soldier home for visit

November 15, 2007

Marine Sgt. Robert J. Stukel, of Channahon, came home Sept. 18 after serving a nine-month deployment in Iraq. A welcome home celebration was held for him Sept. 28 during which he was greeted by family and friends.

While deployed in Iraq, Robert did mostly foot patrols and was stationed in Khan al Baghdadi, Iraq.

"We moved to other areas, but mainly stayed there. Our mission was accomplished while in Iraq," he said.

He suspects that his current unit will redeploy in the summer. They have deployed four times already.

Robert is currently assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines in Camp Lejuene, N.C. His contract ends in January, when he plans to return home and work with the fire department, with which he is a volunteer, or in law enforcement.

Robert has been on active duty since February 2004. His first duty assignment was with the Silent Platoon in Washington, D.C., from November 2004 to November 2006.

While Robert was on his deployment, his stepfather, Mark, and brother, Jacob, volunteered for Operation Care Package, and his brother collected more than 2,000 postage stamps that were donated to send packages to troops.

"We are definitely relieved to have our son back home in the states," his stepfather said. "It was stressful not knowing what he was doing or where he was located during his deployment in Iraq. It was tough knowing he was not able to share in special occasions with his family and friends. To pass the time, we sent many letters and care packages."
