Trooper cited for service in Iraq

NEWARK — A local Ohio Highway Patrol trooper and wounded Marine Corps combat veteran was honored with a military-service award at a state ceremony last week.

Trooper Larry Bowman of the Granville Post sustained a major injury May 8, 2005, during a firefight near the Syrian border in Iraq. After absorbing shrapnel from a hand grenade that severed an artery, Bowman, a gunnery sergeant in the Marines, nearly lost his foot.

On Nov. 8, another military veteran, Henry Guzman, director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, handed Bowman a plaque after he was chosen as the first recipient of the quarterly award.

“I was very impressed,” Bowman, 37, said of when he found out about his selection. “I think it’s great the patrol recognizes its veterans.”

Bowman has been a trooper for seven years and a Marine for 19 years — the first 12 years spent on active duty and the past seven as a reserve.

Nominated by Granville Post Commander Lt. L.H. Roseboro, Bowman’s application was chosen from a pool of seven, public safety spokeswoman Lindsay Komlanc said.

She said the award is intended for department employees who exemplify leadership in their regular job as well as in military duty.

Bowman, who also served in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, said he might return to Iraq in the next couple of years.

Originally, Bowman was not supposed to regain full use of his left leg, but he now said the injury, while leaving him with permanent nerve damage, does not impede his ability to function as a trooper or soldier.
