Iowa pays tribute to troops on Veterans Day

Associated Press - November 12, 2007 8:04 AM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa is paying tribute to its troops past and present.

In Cedar Rapids yesterday, veterans from the Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard were honored during a Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Don Tyne, the director of Linn County Veterans Affairs since 2002, was honored as the veteran of the year.

Tyne, who served in the Vietnam War and Desert Storm, started a food pantry. He's also pushing the Legislature to mandate a part-time veterans' service officer in every county to better serve Iowa's growing veteran population.

In Des Moines yesterday, about 100 people marked Veterans Day at the World War II Memorial on the Capitol grounds.

Lynnette McCay brought her two daughters to the event to honor her father, Clarence Hauck, a World War II veteran. She says it's important to instill thankfulness and remembrance in a younger generation.
