TUSCARAWAS – A surprise party is being planned to welcome cousins Cpl. Carl “Albert” Rypien, 20, and Cpl. Thomas Gilmore, 21, both of Uhrichsville, home from military service in Iraq.

The event is set for Nov. 18 from 4 to 7 in the Tuscarawas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7943.

Rypien is a son of Chone and Ray Burdette of Uhrichsville and Carl Rypien of Stillwater. He is a 2005 Claymont High graduate.

Gilmore is the son of Eric Gilmore and Pat Milburn of Uhrichsville. He is a 2004 graduate of Claymont High.

Both men are members of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Corps Division and were in Iraq for their first tour of duty for seven months. They returned to the United States at the end of October and are expected to arrive in the area on Nov. 17, Chone Burdette said.

Family members and friends plan to hang signs and decorate areas around the Trenton Ave. exit and Rt. 36 bypass near Port Washington before the men arrive.

Chone Burdette said anyone who knows the men is welcome to attend the party. Rypien and Gilmore will be home for 15 days before they return to Camp Lejeune, N.C.

“I’m proud, overwhelmed, glad he’s home safe,” Chone Burdette said. “It’s hard to imagine a boy over there doing a man’s work.”
