Depends on your recruiter more than anything. We usually did either a formation run or an IST and then would learn some Marine Corps knowledge or practice drill movements.

we would get all the poolees from the area and do somethin fun.. go to the lake, play football just depends on your recruiter
I went to one when I lived in N.C. and they PTed us into the ground. Here we usually just hang out waiting for people to get there, and then go play football. Just depends on your Recruiter and your RSS.
We usually play basketball, PT, and go over Marine Corps history. It is very informative and fun. You should go even if you are not DEP'd yet. It's a good way to get to know other future "wannabee" Marines.

Don't know why my last post didn't show up... Anyway, I am going to one this weekend where we are running about 4 miles in the sand on the bank of the Arkansas river. It will be my first chance to get to talk with the other DEPs and wannabes. Surprisingly it sounds a bit fun.

Can't people leave anything to surprise anymore? I'm not trying to single you out, but *******, it seems like poolees come on here and want a distinct run through of every thing that's ever going to go on in their lives. "What will I do at a poole function? What will I do at meps? What will my recruiter tell me? How many freaking people will be in my platoon at boot camp? How much time will I get to wipe my ass at boot camp?"
Remember, just a few short years ago, people didn't have computers, and they just went and did things. It is ok to go into some things in life not knowing what to expect. It's more fun that way.
Once again, I'm not singling you out, but come on, is it really a necessary question? Just go and have fun. Be surprised.

Patriotgirl...are you okay? Need a sip of water? A hug?
I agree with your sentiment, but on the other hand no one wants to jump in the boiling pot without knowing if the water is warm. You can't blame them. The way I see it no amount of information can fully explain the journey some are on.
I will stand by for the anticipated MCMap upside my head, but maybe you could share with me the moves you will execute first, before you do them...so I can be prepared ;) in some little way.

Instead of regular Saturday Pool Functions, our RSS is having it on upcoming monday and we're going to Marine Corps League Leatherneck Club to have Marine Corps Birthday celebration cake-cutting ceremony. I think they are having it for all the poolees and their families since all the recruiters were down at California for the Marine Corps Ball on the actual Birthday. My recruiter told me that there will be a Drill Instructor there, so that should be exciting! :]

Grab your towel, sunglasses, lotion and bathing suit and dive right in to the Poolee Hall of Fame and do a search on this subject that has been discussed numerous times before!

HAHAHA! PG - you're starting to sound like a Marine now. I know what you mean - I can understand the curiosity but, nothing we tell anybody can fully prepare them for what they're getting into. You know yourself that the experience was different for all of us. Even if there had been somebody that I could ask questions of at the time I did it wouldn't have been anywhere close to what I went through.
I just feel sorry for the ones that go through now because of all the PC crap going on the world these days and it HAS leaked into the Corps somewhat. Soooooooo much has changed.

We just did an IST and paintball saturday, followed by a late birthday celebration. I ate WAAAY too much cake, but it was good cake.
In december we are going to do an IST followed by the polar bear challenge (jumping in the ocean in the dead of winter) and a cookout.

At our last poolee function we had this gherkin cake for the Marine Corps birthday, but that was all I was there for because I had to leave early because of an emergency.
The next one we have is supposed to be on the 15th (it was 08 December but I told the Gunny at my RSS I couldn't make it because a friend of mine is flying up from Kentucky to visit me (He's an AF pilot, so he said he was going to fly himself LOL) before I am supposed to ship out to boot, and the plans we already made; so he just said he would change the poolee meeting date for everyone just so I could make it! I thought that was pretty damn cool of him LOL), and from what the Gunny told me today we aren't doing much PT and we are going to a rifle range and I get to try my hand at pulling a trigger. I am beyond psyched about that. I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing LOL ;)

I just got back from the pool function, cake cutting ceremony was great. It was basically a short cake cutting ceremony for future Marines and their family which the recruiters arranged.
It was great seeing so many Marines in Dress Blues for the first time and being there with many other poolees and their families. Also it was a great cake!

Yeah, that was a nice ceremony last night Lee, it was just what I'd thought it would be like. You're right, it was cool seeing so many Marines in Dress Blues. The Marine Corps memorabilia every was awesome seeing so much historical stuff like the old rifles, knives, and everything.
