Hey, Marines. I'm thinking of going officer in the future. Wondering if someone can shed some light on how officers get promoted from 2ndLt on up.

I'm guessing they don't have cutting scores, pros/cons, things like that, so what DO they have?

We draw straws. True story.

well, i can tell you how to NOT get promoted as an officer. Don't jerk the enlisted guys under you around. they can screw your career up for you real good. I know 2 officers that went just a little too far with thier enlisted men, and because of it, never made past thier 1st six years.

good luck on your quest though!

That was in jest of course :) Promotion from 2ndLt to 1stLt is simply at the 2 year mark. We receive FitReps, just like Sergeants and SNCOs. For promotion to Capt and beyond, it requires a HQMC board to select from the in-zone pool of officers. At that point its essentially mirror to the senior enlisted promotion process.

Is this when the officer applies for or is awarded augmentation ?

Augmentation is simultaneous with selection for Capt.
