Tucson's oldest woman Marines veteran - 99-year-old Miriam Cohen - will take part in the city's Veterans Day parade Nov. 12 along with a 105 mm howitzer and several other pieces of artillery on loan from the Army National Guard.

Cohen is one of about 180,000 veterans who live in the Tucson area, said Robert Moody, chairman of the parade, which is sponsored by Morgan McDermott VFW Post No. 7.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at 13th Street and South Sixth Avenue and ends at 2:30 p.m. west of the Tucson Convention Center.
He said the parade will include veterans marching in protest of war. They are members of Veterans for Peace.

"We honor their right to be in the parade," said Moody, senior vice commander and adjutant of the post.

Most local high school Reserve Officer Training Corps will take part in the parade, along with a U.S. Marine Corps honor guard, floats, marching bands from six Tucson Unified School District high schools, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Jewish war veterans.

Floats and cars will carry some parade participants.

Moody said Jewish war veterans taking part in the parade will represent Jews who have fought in every American military conflict since the Civil War.
During the Civil War, he said, Jews fought on both sides.

Also, Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Mothers, who represent mothers of active-duty troops, will be in the parade.

The theme of the parade is "Veterans Hand in Hand."

Col. Kent Laughbaum, commander of the 355th Fighter Wing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, will review the parade from the reviewing stand at Pancho Villa Park, west of Church Street.

Mayor Bob Walkup is the parade's grand marshal.

In another event at 2 p.m. Monday, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System will be the host of a public tribute to veterans. "Our Veterans: Our Heroes" will take place in the fountain courtyard at 3601 S. Sixth Ave. The free event is open to all.
