A group of fishermen are sharing their favorite sport with local Marines injured in Iraq.

The Oceanside Senior Anglers are lending their fishing rods and opening their boats to wounded warriors from Camp Pendleton.

The group took out more than 50 Marines for three fishing trips this year and is recruiting more for their excursions starting next spring.

“We want to get the word out that we'd welcome them anytime,” Fred Kaczmarek said.

The group is also inviting the warriors to the club's land activities, such as clambakes, turkey fries and shrimp boils.

“These young men went through a heck of a lot, and getting back to normal civilian life isn't easy,” said Kaczmarek, who served in the Navy during World War II.

Kaczmarek and fellow anglers hope that a day out on the ocean reeling in a few bass will bring back some simple joys of life.

“You can see them relax when they take in the beauty of the ocean,” Kaczmarek said.

The club of several hundred seasoned fishermen older than 50 took out its first Marines earlier this year and then offered repeat trips from Oceanside Harbor.

“We were bobbing and reeling and having a ball,” Lee Wood said. “It takes their mind off their jobs.”

Even though a few guys got seasick, Hal Reeser called the trips a win-win.

“We've gotten letters and e-mails back telling us they really appreciated it,” said Reeser, a former Marine who served in Korea.

“We're proud of what they're doing and want to show our appreciation,” Wood said.
